The Assassination Attempt of 1912
In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt was in Wisconsin to deliver a speech. While he was on stage, a man named John Schrank had shot Roosevelt in hopes of murdering him. To everyones surprise, Roosevelt did not collapse and die on stage. The bullet had been slowed by going through both Teddy's steel eyeglass case and his fifty page speech in his coat pocket. At the time, Teddy noticed that the bullet did not hit his lungs since he was not coughing up any blood. He then went on to give a ninety minute speech before seeking medical attention. Afterwards, doctors found that the bullet was lodged in a chest muscle and did not do a great deal of damage. The doctors came to the agreement that the bullet should just be left in Teddy's chest.
